RSWC has Three Kinds of Crew on the Race Team:

• Interns
• Volunteers
• Employees

Ron Sutton & Randy Chastain built this winning team with the understanding that people win races, not cars ... and the right people are key to winning.  We have found three types of people fit into the RSWC crew.

1. "Learners" are Racers that join up with RSWC for 1-2 years to learn all they can, before moving onto their own racing or joining another race team. These Guys & Gals fit into our INTERN PROGRAM.  A select few will shine and rise to being hired by a race team and make this a career.  RSWC hires the best person from our Intern Program each year.
2. "Lifers" are veteran racers with racing in their blood, live to race, want to be on a winning team and want to have fun doing it. They join RSWC to race, have fun and win ... without spending their own money. These guys join the RSWC race crew as a VOLUNTEER, but still attend some of the training. (Special Note: RSWC employees are "lifers" too.  They just made their sport of passion their J.O.B.)
3. "Leisure Racers" LOVE racing, but don't have as much time available. They want to be plugged into a top-notch, winning team for the occasional "racing fix." They are the Flex Crew guys that join us when they can and come to a small number of races each season.  These guys ALSO join the RSWC race crew as a VOLUNTEER ... and attend some of the training ... but they attend less races & shop days.

There are two types of people that do NOT fit RSWC:

4. "Lounge Lizards" just want to hang out and drink. These are the guys that think racing is cool, but are not motivated enough to put in the effort it takes to field safe, winning race cars. Please do not apply.  By the way ... our crew will be the first ones to crack a beer after the day is done. But they put a lot of effort and care into fielding safe, winning race cars ... then they cut loose and play.
    
5. "Losers" who don't believe in themselves, don't take responsibility for their life, blame others, have lots of excuses, always have drama in their life and/or use drugs to escape. Please don't apply.

So here are answers to common questions about being a RSWC Race Crew Volunteer . . .

Who typically volunteers to be on the race crew?
Racing Veterans and Rookies are encouraged to apply. We need experienced race crew guys to step into key roles and ramp up quick ... and we want rookies to join and learn how we do things from A to Z.

Car Guys & Race Nuts fit in with this team ... who, either already know how to wrench on race cars … or want to learn how to wrench on race cars … and become a part of the RSWC race crew at the shop & race track. We need race crew Veterans and Rookies ... and have room and roles for both. Guys join our race team as a crew Volunteer for various reasons ... and they all are welcome.

• Some guys never had the opportunity to be around race cars as a younger person and now have a little time. This becomes their toy shop & hobby ... without cost.
• Other Guys have been on a race team in the past ... and miss it ... and this is the opportunity to be on a top team.
• Ex-Racers (Crew & Drivers) that are "Lifers" need to stay in racing more than they need oxygen.  RSWC is pure grade oxygen.

What are the roles available to Volunteers?  
Depending on experience & training ... pretty much all roles.  You just have to prove yourself and work into each role.

1. Crew Chiefs ... make all the tuning calls on the race cars at the track ... and do service & set-up at the shop.
2. Car Chiefs ... run the crew & car at the track ... and do service & set-up at the shop.
3. Race Mechanics ... wrench on the race cars with the Crew Chief & Car Chief ... both at the track & shop.
4. Jack & Fuel Man ... is what the name implies, plus other wrenching on the cars.
5. Data Acquisition Engineer ... install, set-up & read the on-board data acquisition units, help with computers, lap timing, weather station, etc.

There are Two Levels of Volunteers:

1. Core Crew Volunteers ... are the guys that go to many of the races, practice days and wrench one evening a week at the shop … usually Tuesday evenings. The Core Crew is made up of Racing Veterans and Rookies looking to learn. The Core Crew gets first pick on all races, fun events, perks and trips. To be a Core Crew person, a person must:

• Live in, or near, Sacramento, CA ... to get to the shop on a consistent basis.
• Come to the shop on most Tuesday shop nights to wrench on race cars.
• Be available Fridays for Practice days and weekends for races.

2. Flex Crew Volunteer ... is what the names implies ... flexible.

• The Flex Crew can live anywhere in California or Nevada.
• Come to the shop often, sometimes or never (after training).
• Go to as few, or as many, races as desired.
• Flex Crew start at the Jack & Fuel level and can work their way up to Race Mechanics & Car Chiefs.

When would I be needed?
That depends on the crew member status you choose. Flex Crew participate occasionally. Interns & Core Crew participate regularly on Tuesday evenings at the shop and on race weekends. It is outlined in more detail below.

What is the time commitment ?
Depends on which level you choose to be.  Please re-read the info on Core Crew & Flex Crew above.

Who gets to go to the Races and be on the Race Crew?
Only Volunteers that have shown commitment, care & smarts. We don't take people to be on the crew that are not SERIOUS, CAREFUL or SMART ... these are real race cars with real people racing them. So it's real easy ... the Volunteer Crew Guys that show up, learn what we teach, apply themselves and wrench on the cars "with care" are asked to go to the races and crew on the race cars.  There are plenty of spots to do that. We just find a smaller number of people actually prove to be committed, caring & smart. Core Crew goes to more races ... Flex Crew typically less races.

When is the race team active?

• We're a full time professional race team ... so we're in the shop year round, 4-6 days every week.
• Volunteers can start any time of the year ... but only during "Open Enrollment" times scheduled by RSWC.
• You can quit at any time. Please let us know ... so we can plan.
• Shop Nights are most Tuesday evenings. Most guys arrive around 5-6 pm & we wrap up at 9:30 pm.

What about the "Off Season" ?

• What ?  What is this "Off-season" you speak of?
• We're just as busy doing cool stuff when the race season is over ... building new cars, pit carts, projects.
• Also ... most of our Training Classes are during the "Off Season" .. typically on weekends.

When are the races?

• Oval Track Racing are typically Friday-Saturday events.
• We practice on Friday evenings & race on Saturdays.
• Friday practice times vary, but typically start at 3-4 pm and end around 7-8 pm.
• This works well for the local races, because most students are out of school by then.

Where are the Races?

• The Modified Team races locally, at All American Speedway in Roseville. 
• Occasionally, the Modified Team runs at Stockton 99 Speedway. Both are about 45 minutes from the Race Shop.
• The Midget Team runs some local races in Roseville & Stockton ... but also travels to 7 other race tracks on the West Coast
• Including: Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Lake Havasu, Madera, Los Angeles, Irwindale & Meridan, ID.

How do I get to the Local Modified & Midget Races?

• You can simply meet the team at the track.
• Or you can go earlier, meet the crew at the shop & ride with the crew coming from the shop.
• But, it's best if you meet at the track, so you have your car to go home each night.

How do I get to the Midget Races requiring travel ... like Las Vegas, LA, Madera, etc?

• You ride with the Race Crew, either in the Motor Coach or Rig.
• So you have to be able to leave when Crew has scheduled to leave.

What if I'm late to catch the crew leaving for a Travel Race?
We will leave you behind ... we have a schedule to keep ... and we'll shoot you when we get back for leaving us a guy short.   Yes, really !

Does it cost anything ?

• No, we pay for everything except your gas to get to the shop. 
• We even feed you on Shop Nights.

Does it pay anything ?

• No, there is no financial compensation. It's not a job of any kind.
• For our crew volunteers ... this is about fun.
• There are a lot of "perks". The more you're involved, the more perks there are.

I have JOB and/or go to School ... will it interfere?

• That depends on your schedule.
• Shop Nights are on Tuesday evenings, starting around 5-6 pm & go to 9:30 pm.
• Races are on the weekends, typically Friday & Saturday.
• Classes, if you choose to attend, are typically on weekends in the Fall & Winter months.
• Again ... it is your choice to be Core Crew or Flex Crew Guy.

Are Volunteers allowed to participate in the training classes offered?

• Yes, absolutely.  All crew guys are encouraged to participate & learn whatever interests them.
• There is NO COST for the training classes.
• These classes are "No Charge" to all of our active crew people.
• And of course, all crew works hands on with the race cars in the shop and at the race track.

What are the training classes focused on?
There are 26 structured classroom topics... plus in-shop "hands-on" experience opportunities on:

Do we "have to" go to the Training Classes?

• "Have to?" ... Yes ... everyone is required to go to 3 of the 26 classes that are key to our race car assembly and safety.
• But if you think of it as "Have to" ... maybe this team is not for you. 
• All our top people participate in training to advance their knowledge every year.  That's the philosophy of the team.

What does the training program cost?

• These classes are "No Charge" to all of our active crew people. 
• You are trading your time & efforts to the race team ... for rare & valuable training.
• There is only one other real race team training program like this in the United States and it cost $8950 for 10 weeks.
